Well-engineered sprinklers benefits lawn, value of home By Dale Langford Scripps HowardA correctly engineered sprinkler system takes the guesswork out of watering your lawn and helps develop an efficient program as well. The cost of a well-planned system can be high, but consider it a good investment. In addition to being a water-management tool, a sprinkler system boosts a home's resale value and frees the owner from a chore. Another plus is being able to take vacations without having to worry about getting the lawn watered. A sprinkler system can be set to go on early in the morning, when the air usually is calm and low temperatures reduce evaporation. Early watering also allows the lawn to dry before night, reducing risk of disease. Watering schedules can be varied, so one area of the lawn might get 20 minutes while another, with a different sprinkler head, might get 35 to 45. Getting maximum results requires developing a good watering plan. Most sprinkler manufactures include step-by-step instructions on layout, along with information on size and output of various types of heads, from one-quarter circles to triangles to bubblers for the flower beds. You'll need properly rated (for pressure and size) pipe installation. And don't skimp on the number of heads, reducing coverage to the barely adequate. The amount of water your tap delivers will limit the number of heads on each zone. Usually that's not a problem, because control clocks can be selected to handle different zones. It's better to have more heads than needed. Heavy usage by others on a line can lower the water pressure and the efficiency of your system. Having pressure to spare leaves room for expansion and water usage in your house. |
